Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I'd like to recognise Abbey Bailey, a 22-year‑old local and co-founder of Sunlight Surfers, a female-led surf group that is creating waves of change across Newcastle's beaches. Sunlight Surfers began during a girls' surf trip up the coast, when Abbey and her friends shared a vision to create a safe and supportive space for women who love the ocean. What started as a small group has grown into a strong and welcoming community built on confidence, inclusion, and friendship. Abbey helped establish Sunlight Surfers in response to the intimidation many women experience at local breaks. The group's mission is to empower people of all ages and abilities to feel comfortable in the surf and to promote a culture of encouragement and respect in the water. Through regular surf meet-ups, community events, and mentoring, Abbey has played an important role in supporting women to build confidence both on and off the board. Her leadership, warmth, and passion have helped create a space where women can connect, grow, and find joy in the waves. Abbey Bailey is an inspiring example of how one person's idea can make a real difference in their community.
A Community Recognition Notice is an opportunity for an MP to submit a short statement praising the work of an individual or group in the local community. If you have any ideas about people I can recognise with a Community Recognition Notice, please email and let me know!
