Hillsborough Public School and Clear Sky Australia

19 March 2025

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—Charlestown-based disability services and support organisation Clear Sky Australia has partnered with Hillsborough Public School to support the school's canteen and offer new opportunities for their clients. Due to difficulties securing volunteers, Hillsborough Public's tuck shop was at risk of closing. Clear Sky Australia works to aid people with disability in Newcastle and the Hunter through an integrated, hands-on approach. The school's P&C president, Jack Dundas, drew on his experience in the special education sector, reached out to Clear Sky, and together they took steps to save the canteen. Three participants were trained and received qualifications to begin working in the school's canteen, and now the shop is able to be operated three days a week. Congratulations to Jack, the Hillsborough Public School Community, and to Clear Sky Australia and their participants for this innovative and inclusive approach. I am sure other schools facing similar issues will take note.
