Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I would like to recognise Jacob Ure, a local filmmaker and historian, for his dedication to preserving an important chapter of our region's history through his documentary Operation Seagull: The Stockton Bight Disaster. Marking the 72nd anniversary of the 1954 tragedy, Jacob's film tells the story of a routine military training exercise that ended in devastating loss off the coast between Newcastle Harbour and Myall Lakes. Through extensive research and interviews, Jacob has brought renewed attention to the events that saw a convoy of amphibious vehicles struck by sudden severe weather, resulting in multiple vehicles sinking and the loss of three lives. Over the past year, Jacob has worked tirelessly to document this story, including locating and interviewing 10 survivors willing to share their experiences. His passion for local history was sparked after meeting survivor Warren Moxey, inspiring him to ensure these stories are not forgotten. Jacob's work is a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering our past and honouring those affected. I commend him for his commitment to storytelling and for preserving this significant piece of our region's history for future generations.
