Newcastle Northstars

23 September 2026

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—The Newcastle Northstars are back on top of Australian ice hockey, ending a decade-long wait to bring the Goodall Cup home to Newcastle. The Escadia Newcastle Northstars were crowned champions of the 2026 Australian Ice Hockey season after defeating the Canberra Brave 2–1 in a thrilling Grand Final at Melbourne's O'Brien Icehouse on 30 August. The win marks the Northstars' seventh Goodall Cup and their first in 10 years, adding another chapter to the club's proud history. It was a hard-fought road to the championship, with players battling through the physical demands of back-to-back games and putting their bodies on the line for one another when it mattered most. That determination, teamwork and commitment saw the Northstars once again reach the very top of Australian ice hockey and bring its ultimate prize home to Newcastle. Congratulations to every player, coach, staff member, volunteer and supporter who contributed to this fantastic achievement. After a decade-long wait, I am sure it feels particularly good to have the Goodall Cup back where it belongs.
