Saffron Shiels

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)—I proudly recognise the incredible achievement of Saffron Shiels, one of Newcastle's brightest young sporting stars, who has been selected by the Toronto Tempo as the 26th pick in the WNBA Draft. At just 20 years old, Saffron has taken a major step in her career and made our entire community incredibly proud. From the courts of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle to the world stage, Saffron's journey has been nothing short of inspiring. She began with the local basketball club Lakers before rising through the Newcastle Falcons junior system. Her incredible talent, determination and hard work saw her move to Canberra at just 15 to join the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence, where she continued to develop into one of Australia's most exciting young players. Since then, Saffron has gone from strength to strength, representing Australia for the first time at 16, making her debut for the Opals at 17 against China in 2023, and winning a WNBL championship with Townsville Fire. Saffron's future is incredibly bright, and I know our community will be cheering her on every step of the way.
