Tribute to the Hon. Peter Morris

06 May 2026

Ms JODIE HARRISON (Charlestown—Minister for Women, Minister for Seniors, and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault)With great sadness, I bring to the attention of the House the passing of the Hon. Peter Morris, former Federal member for Shortland and Minister in the Hawke Government, who died on 26 April, aged 93. Elected in the Whitlam wave of 1972, Peter served the people of Shortland for 26 years with integrity, compassion and an unwavering belief in fairness. A passionate advocate for transport, he was appointed Minister for Transport in the first Hawke ministry in 1983 and later took on the Aviation portfolio. His achievements include securing original funding for Badgerys Creek, now known as the Western Sydney international airport; helping to open the M1 motorway with Bob Hawke; and playing an instrumental role in establishing Newcastle airport. Peter Morris leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in the Hunter and across Australia. Vale, Peter Morris.
